Climate Elders – COP30, Belém, Brazil (2025)

“Climate Elders” installation view, Museu de Arte Sacra do Pará, Belém, Brazil.

During the COP30 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, “Climate Elders — a global photography exhibition created by 1in6by2030 in partnership with HelpAge International — opens at Galeria Fidanza in the Museum of Sacred Art (Museu de Arte Sacra do Pará), located within the historic St. Alexander Church complex in the Cidade Velha district.

Bringing together the work of photographers from more than 21 countriesClimate Elders highlights the lived experiences of older people whose lives and livelihoods are increasingly shaped by the climate crisis. Each portrait is paired with a personal message addressed to world leaders — intimate reflections that underscore a shared call for urgency, dignity, and meaningful inclusion in climate policy.

The exhibition is curated by Yasemin Elci and organized by Leonardo Carrato. Two public guided tours accompany the exhibition:

  • November 8 at 3:00 p.m. — led by Yasemin Elci and Leonardo Carrato
  • November 15 at 3:00 p.m. — led by Leonardo Carrato

About 1in6by2030

Climate Elders is part of 1in6by2030, a global collaborative project uniting photographers from around the world to shed light on one of the defining demographic transformations of our time — the fact that by the year 2030one in six people on the planet will be over the age of 60.

The project documents the dynamic lives of older people as they navigate the unprecedented social, economic, and environmental shifts of the 21st century. Through locally driven photo essays, 1in6by2030 emphasizes diversity, representation, and sustainability, including an intentional approach to reducing travel-related environmental impact.

The initiative is created by VII photographers Ed KashiIlvy Njiokiktjien, and Sara Terry (1955–2025), to whose memory the project is dedicated.
